Dmitri Kessel was born in the Ukraine in 1902. At the age of 13, his father gave him his first camera. The owner of a sugar plantation thereby influenced his son’s path in life profoundly. After escaping from Russia, Dmitri Kessel immigrated to America in 1923. During the course of his 60-year career, he worked as a war correspondent, industrial photographer and photo journalist for Life.
Kessel was considered an adventurous photographer, frequently rising to new thematic challenges. Thus, he took photographs of World War II and the Greek Civil War, but also produced photo series about the Yangtze River in China and the South American Andes. He also created portraits of prominent personalities, for example Picasso and Stanley Kubrick.
The present lot shows another portrait of a prominent personality, albeit one hiding behind a camera. Indeed, the image shows none less than Henri Cartier-Bresson, outfitted with a coat, hat and his Leica (M3 with Summarit 1,5/50mm) and pursuing his favourite activity: photography.

Dmitri Kessel wurde 1902 in der Ukraine geboren. Im Alter von 14 Jahren schenkte ihm sein Vater eine erste Kamera. Der Betreiber einer Zuckerplantage beeinflusste mit diesem Geschenk den gesamten Werdegang seines Sohnes. Nach der Flucht aus Russland wanderte Dmitri Kessel 1923 nach Amerika aus. Im Laufe seiner 60-jährigen Karriere arbeitete er als Kriegskorrespondent, Industriefotograf und Fotojournalist für Life.
Kessel galt als abenteuerlustiger Fotograf, der sich immer wieder neuen thematischen Herausforderungen stellte. Er fotografierte unter anderem im Zweiten Weltkrieg, im griechischen Bürgerkrieg, produzierte aber auch Fotostrecken über den Yangtse Fluss in China und die südamerikanischen Anden. Außerdem fertigte er Porträts prominenter Persönlichkeiten, wie Picasso oder Stanley Kubrick.
Das vorliegende Los zeigt ebenfalls das Porträt einer prominenten Persönlichkeit, auch wenn diese hinter einer Kamera in Deckung geht. Tatsächlich handelt es sich um keinen Geringeren als Henri Cartier-Bresson, der mit Mantel, Hut und ausgestattet mit seiner Leica (M3 mit Summarit 1,5/50mm) bei seiner Lieblingsbeschäftigung, dem Fotografieren, ertappt wurde.
