“A portrait is not simply the picture of a face,” says Ara Güler, one of Turkey’s most renowned photographers, “it is the entirety of a life.” 86 years old today, Güler remembers Henri Cartier-Bresson: “He was like a big brother to me. He was 20 years older than me and taught me a lot. For me, he’s the greatest.” Through Cartier-Bresson, the doyen of the “decisive moment” and co-founder of Magnum, Güler joined the legendary agency in the early 1960s. Using perspectives reminiscent of his French role model, the “Eye of Istanbul” portrayed not only 20th-century artists, writers and thinkers, but also his native city as it was undergoing transformation: “Our work on Paris and Istanbul was similar in some ways: we both seized the moment when a world was disappearing – a world of artisans giving way to a world of mechanics.” Voted “Master of Leica” in 1962, Güler took this photograph of his friend – as unexceptional as it is symbolic – two years later, using a M3 Chrome: “This portrait speaks volumes. I took it unexpectedly, just when his eye was distracted by a subject he was interested in shooting himself.
The camera – a Leica of course – is at hand, ready for use.” This Leica M3, which Cartier-Bresson used to photograph Marilyn Monroe on the film set for The Misfits (1961), among others, is lot 075 in the camera section.

„Ein Porträt ist nicht einfach das Bild eines Gesichts“, so Ara Güler, einer der bedeutendsten Fotografen der Türkei, „es ist die Gesamtheit eines Lebens.“ An Henri Cartier-Bresson erinnert sich der heute 86-Jährige folgendermaßen: „Er war wie ein großer Bruder für mich. Er war 20 Jahre älter und lehrte mich viel. Für mich ist er der Größte.” Durch ihn, den Papst des „entscheidenden Augenblicks“ und Magnum-Mitbegründer, kam Güler Anfang der 60er-Jahre zur legendären Fotoagentur. In den Einstellungen vergleichbar mit dem französischen Vorbild, porträtierte das „Auge Istanbuls“ neben Künstlern, Schriftstellern und Denkern des 20. Jahrhunderts intensiv seine im Wandel begriffene Heimatstadt: „Unsere Arbeit über Paris und Istanbul war in mancher Hinsicht ähnlich: Wir beide erfassten den Moment, als eine Welt verschwand – eine Welt des Handwerks, die einer Welt der Mechanik wich.“ 1962 zum „Meister der Leica“ gekürt, schuf Güler zwei Jahre später mit einer M3 Chrom dieses ebenso alltägliche wie symbolträchtige Bild seines Freundes: „Dieses Porträt spricht Bände. Ich nahm es unerwartet auf, als sein Auge durch etwas abgelenkt war, das er selbst fotografieren wollte.
Die Kamera – selbstverständlich eine Leica – einsatzbereit zur Hand.“ Diese Leica M3, mit der Cartier-Bresson unter anderem Marilyn Monroe am Filmset von The Misfits (1961) fotografiert hatte, ist Lot 075 im Technik-Teil.
