This photograph of Marilyn Monroe was taken in the spring of 1953 in the courtyard of her Hollywood house. It is part of one of the innumerable series of photographs Alfred Eisenstaedt took for the magazine Life, for which he worked exclusively for decades. Monroe is wearing a high-waisted pair of light pants and a black turtleneck sweater. Resting her right leg on a lounger and angling her arms behind her head, she is looking straight at the camera.
Eisenstaedt was one of the first photographers to work exclusively with 35 mm cameras – he purchased his first Leica as early as 1931. While Eisenstaedt was already a celebrated photo reporter, the actress, 26 years old at the time, had her greatest successes yet ahead of her – but also the years of suffering and depression which ultimately led to her untimely death.
Given this background, it is remarkable how relaxed Monroe seems in this photograph. Surely, this is due not only to the familiarity of her surroundings, but also to Alfred Eisenstaedt’s sensitivity. Indeed, great naturalness and informality distinguishes all his portraits, taken mainly in natural light – of subjects ranging from Sophie Loren and Walt Disney to Albert Einstein and Jackie and John F. Kennedy.

Diese Aufnahme von Marilyn Monroe entstand im Frühjahr 1953 im Innenhof ihres Hauses in Hollywood und entstammt einer der unzähligen Fotoserien, die Alfred Eisenstaedt für das Magazin Life machte, für das er jahrzehntelang exklusiv tätig war. Monroe trägt eine hochgeschnittene helle Hose und einen schwarzen Rollkragenpullover. Ihr rechtes Bein auf eine Liege gestellt und ihre Arme am Hinterkopf abstützend, blickt sie gerade in die Kamera.
Eisenstaedt war einer der ersten Fotografen, der ausschließlich mit Kleinbildkamera arbeitete – schon 1931 kaufte er sich seine erste Leica. Während Eisenstaedt zum Zeitpunkt der Aufnahme schon ein gefeierter Fotoreporter war, hatte die damals 26-jährige Schauspielerin ihre größten Erfolge noch vor sich, aber auch Jahre des Leidens und der Depressionen, die schließlich zu ihrem frühen Tod führen sollten.
Nicht zuletzt vor diesem Hintergrund ist bemerkenswert, wie entspannt Monroe auf dieser Fotografie wirkt. Das ist sicherlich nicht nur der ihr vertrauten Umgebung, sondern auch dem Einfühlsvermögen Alfred Eisenstaedts geschuldet. Tatsächlich zeichnet alle seine vorwiegend in natürlichem Licht fotografierten Porträts – von Sophia Loren und Walt Disney, über Albert Einstein bis hin zu Jackie und John F. Kennedy – eine große Natürlichkeit und Ungezwungenheit aus.
