The filming of The Misfits was documented by nine Magnum photographers, following the drama of the film’s plot as avidly as that unfolding behind the scenes. The screenplay had been a gift of Arthur Miller to his wife Marilyn Monroe, in order to eventually obtain a complex character for her. At the time the film was shot, however, their marriage was heading for divorce and Miller met Inge Morath, who would later become his wife. Apart from various excesses during the shooting, there were also conflicts with Paula Strasberg, who watched over Monroe like a guru (here seen in the background with a black parasol).
The youngest photographer on the set, in mid-August Bruce Davidson created an extraordinary portrait of Marilyn wearing the dress with red cherries which she also wears as Roslyn in the film’s longest scene. In it, she has a dialogue with the rodeo rider Perce, played by Montgomery Clift (here seen in the right background, with the open shirt). Monroe seems isolated – which might be considered one of the film’s main metaphors. The action behind passes irrespectively of the camera and remaining unconnected with the star who is otherwise the centre of attention.
Using his Leica MP, Davidson captured the situation in the spirit of street photography, which was just coming into its own, thus demonstrating a clear difference between his approach and Magnum’s first generation of photographers: here, it is no longer the decisive moment that is translated into 35 mm photography as a integrally secluded composition, but rather one apparently random moment in all its contingency – which is for instance manifested by the overlapping figures in the frame. Thus, Monroe’s image also gains another facet: in its directness, her posing appears a spontaneous gesture aimed at the photographer.

Die Dreharbeiten zu The Misfits wurden von neun Magnumfotografen dokumentiert, die die Dramen des Filmplots ebenso verfolgten wie jene hinter den Kulissen.Das Drehbuch war ein Geschenk Arthur Millers an seine Frau Marilyn Monroe, um ihr endlich eine anspruchsvolle Rolle zu verschaffen. Zum Zeitpunkt der Filmaufnahmen stand die Ehe aber kurz vor der Scheidung und Miller traf auf Inge Morath, die seine nächste Frau werden sollte. Neben diversen Exzessen beim Dreh kam es auch zu Konflikten um Paula Strasberg, die wie ein Guru über Monroe wachte (hier im Hintergrund mit schwarzem Sonnenschirm).
Als jüngster Fotograf am Set schuf Bruce Davidson Mitte August ein außergewöhnliches Porträt Marilyns in jenem Kirschen-Kleid, das sie als Roslyn in der längsten Szene des Films trägt. Darin führt sie einen Dialog mit dem Rodeoreiter Perce, gespielt von Montgomery Clift (mit offenem Hemd rechts hinten im Bild). Monroe wirkt wie isoliert, worin man eine Metapher für ein Hauptthema des Films sehen kann. Das Geschehen dahinter läuft an der Kamera vorbei, ohne Verbindung zu dem Star, der ansonsten im Mittelpunkt der Aufmerksamkeit stand.
Mit seiner Leica MP erfasste Davidson die Situation im Sinne der damals aufkommenden Street Photography und setzte sich damit deutlich vom Stil der ersten Generation von Magnumfotografen ab: Hier wird nicht mehr der entscheidende Moment als geschlossene Komposition ins Kleinformat übersetzt, sondern ein vermeintlich zufälliger Moment in seiner Kontingenz, was sich etwa in Überschneidungen der Figuren im Bildausschnitt manifestiert. So gewinnt auch das Image von Monroe eine neue Facette: ihr Posing erscheint in seiner Unmittelbarkeit als spontane, an den Fotografen adressierte Geste.
