53. Leica M3 chrome

The Leica M3 was the first model of the Leica M-series. “M3” is an abbreviation for what in German reads “Rangefinder camera with brilliant-finder framelines for three focal lengths“. Compared to the previous models, several technical innovations were realised with the introduction of the Leica M3, first presented at the Photokina fair in 1954. Elementary specifications of its design have been adopted into later Leica M models and are still built today. The Leica M3 was produced over a period of more than 13 years – almost
a quarter of a million units had been built when production ceased in 1967.
Here one of the most early Leica M3 cameras known to exist, shutter crate with “Guss” (casting) number 171! The Leica M3 bearing the number 700001 (the first official serial number) has casting number 178. In good condition. Though the top plate was changed for repair by Leitz around 1955, all features are from the very first generation of the M3.

Vorgängermodellen realisiert. Wesentliche konstruktive Merkmale der Leica M3 wurden in den folgenden Leica M-Modellen übernommen und sind bis heute erhalten geblieben. Die Leica M3 wurde über 13 Jahre lang produziert – bis zum Produktionsende im Jahr 1967 in einer Stückzahl von fast einer Viertel Million Exemplaren.
Hier eine der frühesten bekannten Leica M3 Kameras, Chassis mit „Guss“-Nummer 171! Die Leica M3 mit der ersten offiziell vergebenen Seriennummer 700001 hat Guss-Nummer 178. In schönem Zustand. Obwohl die Deckkappe um 1955 erneuert wurde, eine Kamera mit allen Merkmalen der frühesten Ausführung der M3.
