In 1849 Carl Kellner founded his “Optical Institute” in Wetzlar. At first he mainly designed astronomical oculars and telescopes, later also microscopes. Kellner prematurely died in 1855. At first his successors Rexroth, Belthle and LEITZ operated under the name and also marked their products “Carl Kellner’s Successors”, while instruments just marked “Carl Kellner” from the very early period are extremely rare and almost impossible to find today. In the sales records of Kellner, the earliest case of a telescope with stand is documented on November 25, 1852.
The present telescope is the earliest known example of a product from the workshop which turned into the Leitz Company in 1869 – a historically significant piece from the earliest time of Cars Kellner’s Optical Institute, and presumably unique.

Carl Kellner gründete sein „Optisches Institut“ in Wetzlar im Jahr 1849. Er beschäftigte sich zunächst überwiegend mit der Konstruktion von astronomischen Okularen und Fernrohren, später auch Mikroskopen. Bereits im Jahr 1855 verstarb der noch junge Kellner. Seine Nachfolger Rexroth, Belthle und LEITZ firmierten und bezeichneten ihre Produkte anfangs noch mit „Carl Kellners Nachfolger“, während Geräte mit der alleinigen Bezeichnung „Carl Kellner“ heute extrem selten und praktisch nicht zu finden sind. Im Kellner Verkaufsbuch ist erstmals ein „Fernrohr mit Stativ“ nachgewiesen am 25.11.1852.
Das vorliegende Fernrohr ist das frühest bekannte Beispiel eines Produkts der optischen Werkstätte, aus der ab 1869 die Leitz Werke entstanden sind – historisch bedeutend und vermutlich das einzig erhaltene Exemplar aus dieser frühen Zeit des Optischen Instituts von Carl Kellner.
