PROVENANCE Estate of Oskar Barnack

Ernst Leitz I felt thoughtful affection for the rather quiet Oskar Barnack. What he doubtlessly liked was his character, but also his technical knowledge and his attitude towards precision work. Thus, they developed a bond of trust which made the 74-year-old Ernst Leitz I give his only 37-year-old master technician the freedom he needed to develop his own ideas, next to his regular duties. In doing so, he must have guessed these future developments rather than foreseeing them clearly. This relationship is also evident from a series of photographs which Oskar Barnack took with his Ur-Leica during a joint vacation in the Black Forest in the summer of 1917. The negatives of this series are held by the actory Museum of the Leica Camera AG; the vintage print is from the estate of Oskar Barnack, respectively that of his daughter Hanna.

Ernst Leitz I hegte eine geradezu fürsorgliche Zuneigung zu dem eher stillen Oskar Barnack. Was ihm zweifellos gefiel, war dessen Charakter, aber auch die technische Vorbildung sowie seine Einstellung zu Präzisionsarbeit. So entwickelte sich ein Vertrauensverhältnis, das den 74-jährigen Ernst Leitz I bewog, seinem gerade 37 Jahre jungen Meister neben den Pflichtaufgaben den für eigene Ideen nötigen Freiraum zu gewähren, wobei er Kommendes eher geahnt als klar erkannt haben dürfte. Dies erschließt sich auch aus einer Reihe von Fotografien, die Oskar Barnack bei einem gemeinsamen Schwarzwald-Urlaub im Sommer 1917 mit seiner Ur-Leica aufgenommen hat. Die Negative dieser Serie befinden sich im Werksmuseum der Leica Camera AG, der Vintage Print stammt aus dem Nachlass von Oskar Barnack bzw. seiner Tochter Hanna.
