This photograph of Oskar Barnack is one of a series of portraits which must all have been taken at the same time. Barnack is wearing the same outfit as on the wellknown picture taken at work by his assistant Julius Huisgen. There, the calendar on the wall indicates the date as March 19, 1934. Barnack invariably appears with a starched, pristine white shirt-collar, a dark bowtie and a dark suit under his white lab coat, whose freshly ironed lapel bears the same characteristic creases in all variations of the picture. On the reverse of one of them, he noted: “With Elmar 9 cm 1:4, distance 1.5 m”.
During the course of the portrait session, Barnack turns his head from the right-facing profile through changing angles to a full frontal view and a left-facing semi-profile. His gaze is open and without reserve. Some of those who knew him described him as shy. This is nowhere in evidence here. It is a self-assured, even relaxed look. Sometimes it seems as if he were seeing himself in a mirror and correcting his posture or expression. In some pictures, he wears dark-rimmed glasses; in another one, also from this context, he is seated at his desk again, holding the glasses in his hand.
He only signed this one picture. It shows Barnack as he saw himself and as he wanted the world to see him. In short: of all the images, this one must have found his particular favour. It is also worth noting that most newspaper articles on his death also used this image. The present vintage print signed by Oskar Barnack was part of his daughter Hanna’s estate. He gave it to her the same year the picture was taken.

Diese Fotografie Oskar Barnacks stammt aus einer ganzen Serie von Porträtaufnahmen, die alle zusammen entstanden sein müssen. Barnack trägt die gleiche Kleidung wie auf der bekannten, von seinem Mitarbeiter Julius Huisgen am Arbeitsplatz aufgenommenen Fotografie. Dort zeigt das Kalenderblatt an der Wand den 19. März 1934. Stets tritt Barnack auf mit gestärktem, blütenweißem Hemdkragen, dunkler Fliege und in einem dunklem Anzug unter dem weißen Meisterkittel, dessen frischgebügelter Kragen in allen Bildvarianten die gleichen charakteristischen Falten aufweist. Auf der Rückseite eines Bildes notiert er: „Mit Elmar 9 cm 1:4, Abstand 1,5 m“.
Im Laufe der Porträtsitzung dreht Barnack den Kopf aus dem Profil rechts in wechselnden Schrägstellungen über die Frontalansicht bis zum Halbprofil links. Der Blick ist offen ohne Zurückhaltung. Scheu sei er gewesen, sagen manche, die ihn gekannt haben. Hier ist davon nichts zu spüren. Ein selbstsicherer, ja gelassener Blick. Manchmal scheint es, er sehe sich selbst in einem Spiegel, korrigiere Haltung und Miene. Auf einigen Aufnahmen trägt er eine Brille mit dunklem Gestell, die er auf einem anderen, ebenfalls in diesem Zusammenhang entstandenen Bild – er sitzt wieder an seinem Arbeitstisch – in der Hand hält.
Signiert hat er nur dieses eine Bild. Es zeigt Barnack, wie er sich gesehen hat und wie er wollte, dass die Welt ihn sieht. Mit einem Wort: Von allen Motiven muss ihm dies in besonderer Weise zugesagt haben. Interessant auch, dass in Zeitungsberichten über seinen Tod immer wieder dieses Bild Verwendung fand. Der vorliegende, von Oskar Barnack signierte Vintage Print stammt aus dem Nachlass seiner Tochter Hanna. Noch im Jahr der Aufnahme hat er es ihr geschenkt.
