Sam Bejan Tata was born in Shanghai in 1911. He discovered his love for photography while studying economics in Hong Kong, and it deepened when he became a co-founder of the Shanghai Camera Club. Inspired by Oscar Seepol, he dedicated himself early on to portrait photography. The work of his friend Alex Buchmann also left a lasting impression on him, motivating Tata to buy his first Leica, which soon became his constant companion.
The most important influence on Tata’s oeuvre, however, surely goes back to an encounter in 1947 which laid the foundation for a life-long friendship – meeting Henri Cartier-Bresson at an exhibition in Bombay. The creative exchange between the two men is also reflected by their works. Together, they documented the progress made by the Indian independence movement, among other projects.
The present photograph was taken in 1949. The image shows Henri Cartier-Bresson seated, a determined hand on his Leica (IIIc with Summitar 2/5cm). The dark background and gentle light from the side particularly bring out Cartier-Bresson’s face, his shirt and tie and of course the camera.

Sam Bejan Tata wurde 1911 in Shanghai geboren. Seine Vorliebe für Fotografie entdeckte er schon während seines Wirtschaftstudiums in Hong Kong und vertiefte diese Begeisterung als Mitbegründer des Shanghai Camera Clubs. Inspiriert von Oscar Seepol, verschrieb er sich früh der Porträtfotografie. Auch die Arbeit seines Freundes Alex Buchmann hinterließ bleibenden Eindruck und motivierte Tata zum Kauf seiner ersten Leica, die innerhalb kürzester Zeit zu seinem ständigen Begleiter avancierte.
Der bedeutendste Einfluss auf Tatas Schaffen ist aber zweifelsohne auf ein Zusammentreffen im Jahr 1947 zurückzuführen, welches den Grundstein für eine lebenslange Freundschaft darstellte – die Begegnung mit Henri Cartier-Bresson bei einer Ausstellung in Bombay. Der kreative Austausch der beiden Männer schlägt sich auch in ihren Werken nieder. Gemeinsam dokumentierten die beiden unter anderem den Fortschritt der indischen Unabhängigkeitsbewegung.
Im Jahr 1949 entstand die vorliegende Fotografie. Das Bild zeigt einen sitzenden Henri Cartier-Bresson, dessen Hand entschlossen auf seiner Leica ruht. (IIIcmit Summitar 2/5cm). Durch den dunklen Hintergrund und das sanfte Streiflicht werden Cartier-Bressons Gesicht, sein Hemd mit Krawatte und natürlich die Kamera sehr schön herausmoduliert.
