Helen Levitt had significant influence on the genre of street photography. A follower of Henri Cartier-Bresson and a companion of Walker Evans, whom she accompanied during his work on the subway portraits, among other projects, she claimed her own photographic territory during the late 1930s and 1940s. During the era before air conditioning and TV, when life in New York’s neighbourhoods still unfolded outside people’s front doors during the summer months, she photographed children playing in the streets, especially in poorer quarters like Harlem and the Bronx.
She outfitted the used Leica she had bought in 1936 – emulating her idol Cartier-Bresson – with an angle viewfinder, which allowed her to work discreetly. Some of her photographs appear like observations of a foreign culture; the children’s chalk scribblings seem to resemble hieroglyphs, their games rituals – unintelligible to the outsider. The three children in the present photograph also have a mysterious air about them: leaving the house, they pull on their masks as if they had to hide their true faces before entering the public space.

Helen Levitt hat das Genre der Street Photography maßgeblich geprägt. Unter dem Eindruck von Henri Cartier-Bresson und als Weggefährtin von Walker Evans, den sie unter anderem bei der Arbeit an seinen Subwayporträts begleitete, erschloss sie sich in den späten 1930er und 40er Jahren ihr eigenes fotografisches Terrain. In einer Zeit vor Klimaanlage und Fernsehen, als sich das Leben in den Neighbourhoods von New York während der Sommermonate noch vor der Haustür abspielte, fotografierte sie vor allem in ärmeren Vierteln wie Harlem und der Bronx die Spiele der Kinder auf der Straße.
Die gebrauchte Leica, die sie sich 1936 – ihrem Vorbild Cartier-Bresson folgend – gekauft hatte, stattete Levitt mit einem Winkelsucher aus, der ihr diskretes Arbeiten erlaubte. Manche ihrer Fotografien erscheinen wie Beobachtungen einer fremden Kultur; die Kreidekritzeleien der Kinder wirken wie Hieroglyphen, ihre Spiele wie Rituale – unverständlich für den Außenstehenden. Auch den drei Kindern auf der vorliegenden Fotografie haftet etwas Rätselhaftes an: Gerade das Haus verlassend ziehen sie ihre Masken auf, als müssten sie vor dem Übertritt in den öffentlichen Raum ihr wahres Gesicht verbergen.
