Since the early 1950s, Anders Engman worked as a press photographer for Swedish magazines like Se and Vecko Revyn. His first commission abroad took him to the thick of the Hungarian uprising in 1956, he also covered wars and crises in Vietnam, Egypt and Rhodesia, among others. Although he is more at home in the world’s conflict zones, his most well-known image is probably the picture known as Fotbollsbalett from the World Cup finals in 1958.
Playing for the Brazilian team, a seventeen-year old talent made his debut on the international football scene at the World Cup in Sweden. Pelé, as this football legend came to be known, was to dominate the game during years to come. During this final game between the hosts and the Brazilian team, however, a teammate of Pelé’s held the reins of the Seleção firmly in hand: Valdir Pereira, also known as Didi, the midfield mastermind of Rio’s club Botafogo, equally known for his elegant technique and his virtuosic free kicks.
Engman’s composition provides the perfect frame for the Brazilian playmaker: while all around him, adversaries and teammates seem to be falling over their own feet, in the eye of the storm the great Didi stops the ball, as calmly as if he were taking a walk in the park – only to play a deadly pass the next moment. Brazil won the finals with 5 : 2 – the first of its five World Champion titles so far.

Anders Engman arbeitete seit den frühen 1950er Jahren als Pressefotograf für schwedische Illustrierte wie Se und Vecko Revyn. Sein erster Auslandseinsatz führte ihn 1956 in die Wirren des ungarischen Volksaufstandes, weitere Aufträge zu den Kriegen und Krisen in Vietnam, Ägypten oder Rhodesien. Obwohl fotografisch eher an den Konfliktherden der Welt zu Hause, ist sein bekanntestes Bild wohl die oft als Fotbollsbalett apostrophierte Aufnahme aus dem WMFinale 1958.
Auf Seiten der Brasilianer betrat bei der Fußballweltmeisterschaft in Schweden erstmals ein gerade siebzehnjähriges Talent die internationale Bühne. Pelé, so der Rufname der späteren Fußballlegende, sollte den Sport in den kommenden Jahren dominieren. Beim Endspiel 1958 zwischen den Gastgebern und der brasilianischen Mannschaft hielt aber noch ein Teamkamerad Pelés die Zügel der Seleção in der Hand: Valdir Pereira, genannt Didi, Mittelfeldregisseur bei Rios Club Botafogo, ebenso bekannt für seine elegante Spielweise wie für seine virtuosen Freistöße.
Engmans Bildkomposition setzt den brasilianischen Spielmacher perfekt in Szene: Während um ihn herum Gegner wie Mitspieler gleichermaßen über ihre eigenen Füße zu stolpern scheinen, stoppt der große Didi im Auge des Taifuns in aller Seelenruhe den Ball – um im nächsten Moment den tödlichen Pass zu spielen. Brasilien gewann das Finale mit 5 : 2 – der erste von bis heute fünf Weltmeistertiteln.
