PROVENANCE directly from the photographer

Erich Lessing came to Paris in 1950, when David “Chim” Seymour invited him to join Magnum as one of the earliest second-generation members. Even if war and revolutions constantly recur in Lessing’s pictures, his approach is profoundly humanistic. Throughout his long career, he depicted people in many roles and situations in life – as people, as rulers, as revolutionaries, as instruments of the state, or – as in this photograph – as working artists.
Using a Leica M3, Lessing photographed the French actor and chansonnier Maurice Chevalier (1888 – 1972) during the film shooting of his song “Deux amoureux s’embrassaient sur un banc, l’un contre l’autre, enlaces tendrement…”. Illustrating the text, a pair of lovers sits in close embrace on a bench on the most well-known boulevard in Paris, the Champs-Elysées.
The bicycle which one of them may have arrived on is leaning against a tree next to them. The singer stands in the background, dressed impeccably as always, wearing his typical hat. He looks at the two lovers, beams and laughs. Not just in this photograph, Chevalier, who also made films in Hollywood and received an Honorary Oscar in 1959, embodied the very image of the charming and elegant Frenchman.

Nach Paris kam Erich Lessing 1950, als David „Chim” Seymour ihn als eines der ersten Mitglieder der zweiten Generation zu Magnum holte. Auch wenn Krieg und Revolution in Lessings Bildern immer wiederkehren, ist seine Annährung eine zutiefst humanistische. In seiner langen Karriere lichtete er Menschen in allen Rollen und Situationen des Lebens ab – als Volk, als Regierende, als Revolutionäre, als Instrumente des Staates oder, wie auf dieser Aufnahme, als Künstler bei der Arbeit.
Mit einer Leica M3 fotografierte Lessing den französischen Schauspieler und Chansonnier Maurice Chevalier (1888 – 1972) bei Filmaufnahmen für sein Lied „Deux amoureux s’embrassaient sur un banc, l’un contre l’autre, enlaces tendrement...”. Den Text illustrierend, sitzt ein verliebtes Paar eng umschlungen auf einer Parkbank auf dem wohl bekanntesten Boulevard in Paris, den Champs-Elysées.
Ein Rad, mit dem einer der beiden gekommen sein mag, lehnt an einem Baum daneben. Im Hintergrund steht der Chansonnier, wie immer elegant gekleidet und mit dem für ihn charakteristischen Hut. Er blickt die zwei Verliebten an, strahlt und lacht. Nicht nur auf dieser Fotografie prägte Chevalier, der auch in Hollywood Filme drehte und 1959 den Ehren-Oscar verliehen bekam, das Bild vom charmanten und eleganten Franzosen.
