Venice has many faces, most of which remain hidden to the casual visitor. With his impressions of Venice, Gianni Berengo Gardin opens a gateway to the inner life of the city which is often called “doomed”. Instead, his vivid photographs give her back her original name, La Serenissima – the most serene. This spontaneously captured moment with its cheerful, animated atmosphere at the Lido shows the life of young Venetians at its playful and light-hearted best, simultaneously making the unknown side, i.e. the inhabited Venice, visible.
The Leica photographer Berengo Gardin is known for his photo essays from Italy from the 1950s to the 1970s. He came to photography during a year spent in Paris. At the time, he met the leading proponents of “Phtographie humaniste”, e.g. Robert Doisneau, Édouard Boubat and Willy Ronis, and, always interested in people, he began to explore the Seine metropolis in the spirit of street photography. Berengo Gardin, whose works have been shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, is among the most important Italian photographers of the second half of the 20th century. In terms of monographs, he is also one of the most widely published photographers, with far more than one hundred book publications to his name.

Gianni Berengo Gardin öffnet mit seinen Venedig-Impressionen ein Tor zum Innenleben einer Stadt, die oftmals als „die dem Untergang geweihte“ bezeichnet wird und gibt ihr mit seinen lebendigen Fotografien ihren eigentlichen Namen zurück – La Serenissima – die Heitere, Gelassene. Der spontan erfasste Augenblick mit seiner heiterbeschwingten Atmosphäre am Lido zeigt das Leben junger Venezianer in seiner spielerischen und leichten Art und macht zugleich die Seite des unbekannten, nämlich die des belebten Venedigs sichtbar.
Leica Fotograf Berengo Gardin ist bekannt für seine Fotoessays aus dem Italien der 1950er bis 1970er Jahre. Zur Fotografie gelangte er durch einen einjährigen Aufenthalt in Paris. Damals machte er Bekanntschaft mit führenden Vertretern der „Photograpie humaniste“ wie Robert Doisneau, Édouard Boubat oder Willy Ronis und erkundete selbst die Seinestadt im Geist einer am Menschen interessierten Straßenfotografie. Berengo Gardin, dessen Werke u.a. im Museum of Modern Art, New York City und in der Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris gezeigt wurden, zählt zu den bedeutendsten italienischen Fotografen der 2. Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts und mit weit über hundert Buchpublikationen zu den rührigsten Büchermachern überhaupt.
