A winner of the Oskar Barnack Prize, Gianni Berengo Gardin began his career as a photo reporter for the weekly newspaper Il Mondo in the mid-1950s. Later, his photographs were published by magazines like Domus, Epoca, Time and Stern and in the daily papers Le Figaro and L’espresso. When he moved from Venice to Milan in 1964, he turned to fashion and still-life photography. Guy Mandery wrote about him: “Berengo Gardin too is first and foremost a discoverer – of situations, people, landscapes and objects.
Often, his talent consists in conveying an unadorned and non-artificial image of things – as they are, in the raw and unprocessed. It is pointless to accuse him of a lack of style, for it quickly becomes apparent that the supposed lack of style is his very special manner.” The present photograph is presumably Gianni Berengo Gardin’s most famous motif, taken on a vaporetto, a kind of water omnibus – the most frequentlyused mode of transportation in Venice. The image is convincing in its complexity, the concurrence of perspectives, vistas and reflections which form an almost surreal conglomerate for the duration of a second.

Seine Tätigkeit als Fotoreporter begann Oskar-Barnack-Preisträger Gianni Berengo Gardin Mitte der 1950er Jahre bei der Wochenzeitung Il Mondo. Später wurden seine Fotografien in Magazinen wie Domus, Epoca,Time und Stern und in den Tageszeitungen Le Figaro und L‘espresso veröffentlicht. Als er 1964 von Venedig nach Mailand übersiedelte, wandte er sich der Modeund-Stillleben-Fotografie zu. Guy Mandery schrieb über ihn: „Auch Berengo Gardin ist zuallererst ein Entdecker – von Situationen, Menschen, Landschaften und Gegenständen.
Sein Talent besteht häufig darin, uns die Dinge ungeschminkt und ungekünstelt zu übermitteln, so wie sie sind, noch roh und unbearbeitet. Vergebens wollte man ihm einen Mangel an Stil vorwerfen, denn schnell wird klar, dass gerade die scheinbare Abwesenheit eines Stils seine besondere Manier ausmacht.“ Die vorliegende Fotografie ist Gianni Berengo Gardins wohl berühmtestes Motiv, entstanden auf dem Vaporetto, einer Art Omnibus auf dem Wasser – in Venedig das am meisten benutzte Verkehrsmittel. Die Bildfindung überzeugt durch ihre Komplexität, das Miteinander von Durchblicken, Ausblicken oder Spiegelungen, die für die Dauer eines Wimpernschlags ein fast schon surreales Miteinander formen.
