The present print is the first proof print of this image, which Erwitt kept on the wall in his studio for a long time. It shows Erwitt’s ability to create succinct images of moments that seem random finds, but which make a visual statement on the human condition that is not without irony.
The apparent casualness masks the design and technical abilities that allow these found images to speak: this includes perfect cadrage – in this example, the movement of hasty walking is emphasised as the group of women walk into the picture from the right margin; furthermore, the choice of perspective underlines the image’s statement by its graphic composition – in this case, comparing a folklore group rushing along the village street in a tight “gaggle” with a flock of geese – an effect that is further emphasised by isocephaly (depicting all the heads in a composition at the same level). Billowing with many petticoats, the traditional costumes from the area around Buják form an analogy with the bodies of the geese. This visual and metaphorical relation also allows the viewer to associate linguistic expressions like that of a bird’s “coat of feathers” or “chatterbox”. Erwitt published this image in 2011 next to a second photograph of the same protagonists, which, however, has the opposite “direction”: there the geese follow the girls.

Bei dem vorliegenden Abzug handelt es sich um den ersten Proof-Print dieser Aufnahme, den Erwitt lange in seinem Studio aufgehängt hatte. Darin zeigt sich Erwitts Fähigkeit, prägnante Bilder von wie zufällig gefundenen Momenten zu schaffen, die nicht ohne Ironie eine Aussage zur conditio humana optisch verdichten.
Hinter der scheinbaren Beiläufigkeit verbirgt sich das gestalterische und technische Können, das diese Bildfindungen erst treffsicher sprechend macht: Dazu zählt eine perfekte Kadrierung – hier wird etwa die Bewegung eiligen Schreitens betont, indem die Frauengruppe vom Bildrand leicht angeschnitten ins Bild tritt; weiters die Wahl eines Blickwinkels, der das Funktionieren der Bildaussage mittels grafischer Komposition gewährleistet – hier den Vergleich einer dicht gedrängt, „schnatternd“ über die Dorfstraße eilenden Trachtengruppe mit einer Gänseherde, der durch Isokephalie („Gleichkopfhöhe“) verstärkt wird. Die durch viele Unterröcke gebauschte, knielange Tracht, wie sie für die Gegend um Buják typisch ist, tritt mit den Gänsekörpern in Analogie. Durch diese visuell-metaphorische Relation werden auch sprachliche Begriffe wie Federkleid oder chatterbox assoziierbar. 2011 publizierte Erwitt dieses Bild neben einer zweiten Aufnahme derselben Protagonisten, allerdings in umgekehrter „Argumentationsrichtung“, denn dort folgen die Gänse den Mädchen.
