Alfred Eisenstaedt’s first encounter with John F. Kennedy and his wife took place in August 1960, when the photographer was commissioned by Life to portray the recently-nominated Democratic presidential candidate at his summer residence in Massachussetts. Eisenstaedt described the atmosphere as particularly laid-back and informal; he was especially taken by Jackie’s beauty.
Several weeks after this first encounter, the present picture was taken. It shows the Senator and his wife at an official campaign event in New York City on September 14, 1960. From this point onwards, the photographer not only accompanied the couple during its election campaign and documented the official inauguration the next year, but also captured more private and quiet moments with his Leica M3-E.
Thus, there are photographs of JFK by himself and in thought, or with his daughter at the summer house, and of Jackie reading to her children. “To succeed you must like people and have them like and trust you in return. […] You must be a psychologist,” Eisenstaedt explained his working method. The fact that this mutual trust existed between the Kennedy family and him is indicated further by the personal dedication on the front of this vintage print, which makes this copy an absolutely extraordinary and rare piece: “To Eisie – with gratitude”, signed by “John Kennedy” and “Jackie Kennedy”.

Das erste Treffen von Alfred Eisenstaedt mit John F. Kennedy und dessen Frau fand im August 1960 statt, als der Fotograf von Life den Auftrag bekam, den soeben gekürten Präsidentschaftskandidaten der Demokraten in seiner Sommerresidenz in Massachussetts zu porträtieren. Eisenstaedt schilderte die Stimmung als ausgesprochen locker und informell; auch war er besonders von Jackies Schönheit angetan.
Einige Wochen nach diesem ersten Treffen entstand die vorliegende Aufnahme. Sie zeigt den Senator und seine Frau bei einer offiziellen Wahlveranstaltung in New York City am 14. September 1960. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt begleitete der Fotograf das Paar nicht nur bei der Wahlkampfkampagne und dokumentierte im darauffolgenden Jahr die offizielle Amtseinführung, sondern fing mit seiner Leica M3-E auch private, stillere Momente ein.
So gibt es Aufnahmen von JFK alleine mit seinen Gedanken oder mit seiner Tochter im Sommerhaus sowie von Jackie, wie sie ihren Kindern aus einem Buch vorliest. „To succeed you must like people and have them like and trust you in return [...]. You must be a psychologist“, erklärte Eisenstaedt selbst seine Arbeitsweise. Dass dieses beidseitige Vertrauen zwischen der Kennedy-Familie und ihm ganz offensichtlich vorhanden war, belegt auch die persönliche Widmung auf der Vorderseite dieses Vintage-Prints, die den Abzug zu einem ganz außergewöhnlichen und raren Stück macht: „To Eisie – with gratitude”, signiert von “John Kennedy” und “Jackie Kennedy”.
