17. Leica IIIc Prototype

A completely new design was the Leica IIIc with diecast shutter crate – a technical detail which is still to be found in the present analog models of the Leica M-system. First trials for such a camera date back to 1933. The earliest known completely finished Leica IIIc prototype camera carries the serial number 335006. The camera here with number 290000 was discovered only recently, which can be considered a sensational find. Technically, it is identical with no. 335006 to a great extent – concerning the shutter-crate and -mechanism. Also in design of the topplate with the typical round-shaped step under the rewind – a detail which was changed with the first serial camera of a IIIc. Moreover, the camera shows a number of other differences, such as slow-speed aluminun dial without engravings, as well as topplate without engravings for “R/A“ and diopter control. A historically important piece and most probably the earliest complete Leica IIIc prototype camera.

Eine vollständige Neukonstruktion war die Leica IIIc mit Verschlussrahmen aus Spritzguss – ein Detail das auch die aktuellen analogen Modelle des Leica M-Systems noch aufweisen. Erste Versuche zu einer solchen Kamera gehen zurück auf das Jahr 1933. Die frühest bisher bekannte fertig gefinishte Leica IIIc Prototypenkamera trägt die Nummer 335006.
Das hier vorliegende Exemplar mit der Nummer 290000 ist kürzlich aufgetaucht und kann als Sensation bezeichnet werden. Die Kamera ist mit Nr. 335006 in ihrem technischen Aufbau – was den Verschlussrahmen und die Mechanik angeht – weitgehend identisch. Ebenso die Gestaltung der Deckkappe, mit der typischen Rundung unter der Rückwicklung – dieses Detail ist ab der ersten IIIc Serienkamera geändert. Die Kamera weist zudem einige Abweichungen auf: Der Einstellknopf für das Langzeitenwerk aus Aluminium und ohne Gravur, die Deckkappe ohne Gravuren für „R/A“ und Dioptrienausgleich. Als vermutlich früheste komplette IIIc Prototypenkamera ein historisch bedeutendes Stück.
